In 2019, Michael Dougherty directs and co-writes Godzilla: King of the Monsters, an American monster picture set in Japan. Serizawa makes a big sacrifice by manually detonating the warhead, waking up Godzilla, and giving him more power.
Emma believes Ghidorah and the other Titans' devastation will be much worse than anything humanity could achieve, but Jonah ignores her. Orca gets stolen by Madison. When Madison arrives at Fenway Park, she accidentally transmits a frequency that soothes the Titans. Ghidorah attacks Boston's Orca. Godzilla comes to attack him with Monarch personnel's help. Mark leads a team to rescue Madison and flee the city as Godzilla's radiation levels rise, threatening a nuclear explosion. To assist Godzilla, Mothra is stopped by Rodan; she beats him but is damaged.
Despite Ghidorah's overwhelming might, Mothra sacrifices herself and gives her power to Godzilla, preventing him from being killed. It is revealed that the Orca is reactivated and used to lure Ghidorah from Godzilla. Emma sacrifices herself so that Mark, Madison, and the rest of the Monarch crew may get away from Ghidorah. Reborn Godzilla beats Ghidorah in an all-out battle. The Titans, led by Rodan, assemble before Godzilla and submit to his will and authority.
He indicated that he intended Godzilla (2014) to be a stand-alone picture, and that he was averse to ideas that the film's conclusion should leave the door open for a sequel. When asked about the possibility of returning for a sequel, he indicated he was open to the idea as long as the current picture met his expectations "I'm looking for a tale that has a strong beginning and a satisfying conclusion. That's all we cared about while we were creating this; simply one picture. The others can come if this one is good, but for now, let's focus on this and not get distracted by anything else." Legendary gave the go-ahead for a Godzilla sequel after the first film grossed $103 million worldwide, with intentions to make a trilogy and director Gareth Edwards engaged to helm the project. Toho's Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah properties were officially bought by Legendary in July 2014 at San Diego Comic-Con. A teaser trailer with the phrase "Let them fight" was aired, featuring concept art of all three characters. The sequels haven't made any more announcements about the characters' future appearances. Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein will return for a second time to write the film's script, which will be released on June 8, 2018.
Announcing his return for the sequel in April 2015, Aaron Taylor-Johnson said his choice was dependent on Edwards'. King Ghidorah, Monarch, and Rodan were Legendary's sole requirements. A new screenplay was written by Dougherty and his crew. For his two-page proposal, Dougherty included basic beats and character sketches. Then Dougherty and co-writer/executive producer Zach Shields convened a writers' room with Borenstein. Ten authors aided the treatment's development. It took a year to write the script.
Dougherty rewrote lines throughout shooting and post-production. Balancing the monster spectacle "while still creating a story with human characters that we care about." he said. A bunch of heroes, Dougherty felt, might be formed from the organization. So the movie became an ensemble piece.
In the original script, Mark and Sam were meant to be old friends. In later drafts, this was changed from Sam to Serizawa so that he would be Mark's guide and help him learn. Adding the Oxygen Destroyer as an example of "humanity's inability to not interfere." is what Dougherty did. They decided to kill Godzilla in the middle of the movie because this is something that hasn't been done in other Godzilla movies.
The movie changes the monsters' name from "MUTOs" to "Titans" Dougherty said that he wanted the monsters to look like they were from God and make people worship them "Prehistoric man saw these creatures. You want to give them a power that would make him fall to his knees and bow to this god. In order for it to work, it can't just look like big dinosaurs. Jurassic Park takes care of that. These have to be different. They must do their own thing. People who play for the Titans are very good at their jobs." When the designers were told by the director, they should look at the original designs from every era and "distill those silhouettes and those key traits into something more modern." "very large animals with a distinct thought process." were important to the director.
For Rodan, volcanic rock was added to the scales and skin tone to give Rodan the appearance of being able to survive in a volcano. It was Dougherty's goal to build something that "Mother Nature could have created." for Rodan's design. The designers were told to look at birds like vultures, eagles, and hawks, not simply Pteranodons, since birds are closely linked to dinosaurs. The "scary" and "predatory" moth species were found by Dougherty. The filmmaker thought Mothra the most challenging Titan to create because he sought to avoid having Mothra appear like a blown-up moth. Legacy Effects contributed the design for Mothra.
The director urged the design team to keep an Eastern dragon influence for Ghidorah and to avoid any Western dragon influence, adding, "They're not classic western dragons. So that was the plan from the start... We don't want it to resemble a dragon." Ghidorah's design came from Legacy Effects. Dougherty compared Ghidorah to Rip Van Winkle, a character with a sense of curiosity and cruelty. "not part of the natural order." said producer Alex Garcia.
The film was released on Digital HD on August 13, 2019, and distributed on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD on August 27, 2019. The 4K edition contains HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision high dynamic range, and a Dolby Atmos audio. Best Buy introduced a 4K UHD Combo steelbook exclusive. No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert list. The DVD made $12.6 million and the Blu-ray $23.5 million, for a total of $36.1 million in American video sales.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released on May 31, 2019, in IMAX, 3D, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, 4DX, and ScreenX formats by Warner Bros. Pictures, except in Japan where it was distributed by Toho. The initial release date for the film was June 8, 2018. However, it was delayed twice, the first time to March 22, 2019, and the second time to its present date of release.
Some markets got the film in ScreenX format. There is some monster action, bloodshed, and devastation in the picture, plus some profanity. A 30-minute Q&A with Dougherty and Ken Watanabe followed a private press screening in Tokyo in April 2019.
Attendees were able to pose in scenes from the film using a green-screen photo booth. Attendees at Regal's IMAX theaters received a mini-poster of the ticket's picture in addition to a collector ticket. The movie begins in 2014. Following the tragic struggle that took place there, Mark (Kyle Chandler) and Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) had lost their oldest son Andrew, while hanging onto their baby daughter Madison (Lexi Rabe) (Lexi Rabe). Emma glances up and gets a sight of Godzilla himself, somewhere after his fight with the MUTOS.
Mothra, who has been in a cocoon beneath a waterfall, awakens with gorgeous shining wings, and she flies her way toward Godzilla, who is alive but weakened, and is healing underwater. Monarch locates the two, as Mothra is speaking with Godzilla. The crew finds that Mothra is basically the queen of the monsters, thus she and Godzilla “have a thing”, as Barnes explains. Ilene also reminds us via ancient writings that Ghidorah was among the most feared of the Titans, and he would fight Godzilla for dominance.
At this point, Emma has figured out that her original plan has gone awry. She also found out that Ghidorah is leading the Titans to do even more damage. It's not just Madison who doesn't like her mom for it. She calls her a monster. Since Fenway Park and most of Boston have been evacuated, they can use the Orca to broadcast a frequency through there. Emma tells Jonah this, but Jonah turns his back on her. Madison steals the Orca and goes to Fenway Park on her own. She sends out the frequency that is strong enough to draw the Titans to that place. Ghidorah and Godzilla show up, and they keep going on the rampage across the city while Madison runs for cover.
Mark informs the Monarch team that Emma created the Orca using Godzilla and human frequencies, so humanity is fighting alongside the Titans. They also see Godzilla emitting a huge nuclear pulse and about to explode. Mark travels into the city to rescue Madison, and they ultimately come upon Emma, who has escaped from Jonah to save her daughter. Madison has gone to their old house, and they find her unconscious but alive, under the rubble.
Another Titan is on its way to whatever remains of Boston. Even Rodan is subservient to Godzilla. Mark, Madison, and the rest of Monarch are awestruck by what they see in the sky. Afterwards, Godzilla unleashes an ecstatic roar.
During the credits, we see media headlines making notes that a Mothra egg has been found (indicating she can come back), while continuing to detail current activities in Skull Island. We see other cave paintings, including one in which Godzilla confronts the world’s second most well-known Titan…KONG.
Eco-terrorist Alan Jonah and his squad abduct Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison to awaken King Ghidorah using a gadget Emma built called The Orca that transmits frequencies used to communicate with Titans, some years after Godzilla's appearance in San Francisco. Emma uses the Orca to tame a newly-hatched Mothra, and Jonah sees its capabilities.
A team of Monarch scientists and troops led by Emma's estranged husband Mark has formed to stop Jonah from achieving what he wants; however, the squad arrives too late to stop Emma from freeing Ghidorah. In their first encounter, the monster goes on the attack and defeats Godzilla. Mark learns from Emma that she has been working with Jonah to unleash the Titans on the Earth in order to restore balance to the planet.. Before battling and ultimately succumbing to Ghidorah, he murders a whole squadron of troops after rescuing Rodan from his volcano. Afterwards, the three-headed dragon asserts his authority, inspiring the other Titans to rise and wreak devastation.
Mothra's egg has been discovered, as Godzilla and Kong are preparing for their showdown. One of Ghidorah's heads is handed to Jonah as an experiment.
